Dental implants could be the perfect solution for you, and our Halifax dental implant team is ready to help.

An implant can help anyone who has lost a permanent tooth and wants to replace it with a long-lasting solution. Implants are currently the closest thing to natural teeth that modern dentistry has produced, and they can help you to enjoy a complete, stable, comfortable and beautiful smile.

Are you tired of seeing those empty spaces in your smile?

A dental implant is a sturdy titanium post that is placed beneath the gums where a natural tooth used to be. Implant posts have threads, much like screws, which help them to become snugly embedded in the bone.

This means that most of an implant is not even visible; it is hidden below your gums with only a small portion visible above them. After an implant has thoroughly integrated with the surrounding bone tissue, the dentist then covers the exposed top of it with a dental restoration. The result is something that looks like a whole natural tooth.

Benefits of dental implants

How can dental implants help you? Explore some of the benefits that can result.

Dental implants do more than fill in empty spaces. They preserve bone in the jaw, improve oral health by keeping neighbouring teeth in proper alignment, boost confidence with a complete and youthful-looking smile, and let you enjoy a full range of foods that may otherwise be difficult to chew.

Dental implants - your treatment journey

Here is what you can expect when you visit us to restore your smile with dental implants.

Consultation.

The first step is visiting our practice in Halifax for an initial consultation and professional dental cleaning. Neill will carefully evaluate the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone and assess the fit of your bite and let you know if dental implants are right for you.

We will answer your questions and provide you with a quote for the cost of your treatment. If you decide to move forward with the treatment plan we propose, then we will waive the cost of this initial consultation.

Treatment planning.

The next step is planning the course of your dental implant treatment. We will start by taking a CBCT scan (three-dimensional X-ray) of your jaw. This image will help Neill determine the optimal placement of your implant during your surgery.

Neill will then fully explain the recommended treatment plan and what you can expect. At this point, we can now schedule you for dental implant surgery.

Implant placement.

The actual process of placing an implant does not take long. Your implant surgery will likely take only 30–60 minutes. If you struggle with dental anxiety, then we can arrange for you to be mildly sedated during your treatment.

We will begin by ensuring that you are comfortable and that the treatment site is sufficiently numbed with local anaesthesia. Neill will then make a small opening in your gums, create a tiny hole in the bone underneath, place the implant inside and then close up the gum tissue around the site.

Healing.

The healing stage is a very important part of your dental implant treatment. It generally takes around three to six months for the bone to heal and firm up around a dental implant.

Before you go home after your surgery, we will provide you with detailed instructions for making a quick and comfortable recovery and explain how you can help your implant treatment site to heal rapidly. We may need to call you into our practice shortly before restoring your implant to place the abutment, a cap that connects your implant to your restoration.

Restoration.

Once your implant has finished healing, we will fit you for your restoration. We will scan your teeth with an intraoral scanning device to take a digital impression of your implant and the neighbouring teeth. This scan will help us design a custom restoration for your implant to complete your smile.

Frequently asked questions about dental implants

Does it hurt to have dental implants placed?

No, getting dental implants placed is not painful at all. This is because implants are placed after the dentist administers a local anaesthetic injection. Your mouth will be numb in the treatment site, so the dental implant surgery will not hurt.

It also does not take long to place a single implant — your treatment may likely be completed within just half an hour. While it is normal to experience some post-operative discomfort, this is surprisingly minimal, and our dental team will explain what you can do to minimise the discomfort and heal quickly.

Is my teenager old enough to get a dental implant?

The short answer is: it depends. Dental implants can only be placed in mature bone tissue that has stopped growing. If your teenager has lost a permanent tooth, then they are probably anxious to fill in the gap, and a dental implant could be an excellent replacement. But if your teenager’s jaw and facial development have not yet finished, then they may need to wait a few more years.

In the meanwhile, your teenager could get by with a temporary solution like an adhesive bridge, or partial denture. Visit a dental implant dentist to have your teenager’s mouth examined to find out if they are ready to get an implant.

Can I get dental implants instead of a denture?

You could choose to get one or more dental implants in place of a removable denture, or you could even get dental implants to help anchor a denture in place. By consulting with a dental implant dentist, you can learn about all of your tooth replacement options and find out which treatment (or combination of treatments) is best for you.

Can I get dental implants if I smoke?

Yes, it is still possible to get dental implants if you smoke tobacco. However, it is important to be aware that smoking can affect your body’s ability to quickly heal after dental implant surgery.

Smoking reduces circulation in the tissues of your mouth and this makes it harder for your gums and bone tissue to heal around an implant. Talk with a dental implant dentist to discuss your unique dental health needs and find out how smoking may impact your implant treatment.

Will anyone be able to tell that my implant is not a real tooth?

Because dental implants are hidden beneath the gums and covered with lifelike restorations, they look just like natural teeth, and no one would ever be able to tell that your implant is not a real tooth. The only way others would know is if you tell them. Even then, they may not believe you!
