What could be causing my bad breath?
There are multiple factors that can contribute to bad breath, also referred to as halitosis. One of the most common causes is poor oral hygiene. Simply brushing and flossing your teeth more often or cleaning your tongue can help improve your breath. There are, however, other causes of halitosis that cannot be remedied with oral hygiene, alone. These include: respiratory infections, decayed teeth, gum disease, digestive issues, and certain metabolic health conditions. Visit a dentist or a physician for a check-up if your breath odour does not improve as bad breath can be a sign of a health problem.
Is root canal treatment painful?
No, it does not hurt to get root canal treatment. At our practice in Halifax, we carefully administer local anaesthesia to the treatment area beforehand to ensure that you do not feel a thing. Most conditions that necessitate root canal treatment are painful, but the treatment itself is meant to soothe pain—not cause it—by relieving pressure and removing inflamed or infected tooth nerves.
Do I need a dental filling or a crown?
A dental filling is ideal in situations where a tooth sustains only a small amount of damage. You may need a filling if you have chipped a tooth or if you have a small cavity. A dental crown, on the other hand, is best for teeth that have extensive structural damage or that need to be completely covered to improve the aesthetics. By visiting a dentist to have your tooth examined, you can find out whether a dental crown or a filling is the right restoration for your tooth.
Why are my teeth yellow?
Yellow teeth are a common result of the natural ageing process. The inner layer of your teeth contains dark yellow pigment, and this is surrounded by layers of enamel. The enamel makes your teeth appear white, so as the enamel layer wears away over time, the dark yellow layer inside the tooth is exposed. Yellow-coloured teeth can also be caused by smoking or a diet high in foods that contain dark pigments. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to lighten your tooth colour and take years off your smile. It is important to note, however, that some at-home teeth whitening treatments can actually turn your teeth yellow as they damage the enamel of your teeth. This is why it is essential to see a dentist for professional teeth whitening treatment.
